Thallus endophloeodal to epiphloeodal, to c. 200 µm thick, greyish to greenish or yellowish grey, ±glossy, smooth, continuous to verrucose, rimose or not. True cortex ±continuous, to c. 30 µm thick, formed by periclinal hyphae. Algal layer moderately well developed, continuous; calcium oxalate crystals large, scattered or clustered. Vegetative propagules not seen. Ascomata inconspicuous, to c. 0.8 mm diam., ±rounded, perithecioid to indistinctly apothecioid at maturity, solitary, immersed to slightly raised, then hemispherical. Disc with the columella visible in older ascomata, pruinose, pale brownish to greyish, free or fused with the thalline rim, entire. Proper exciple not visible from above; thalline rim margin to 0.2 mm diam., ±rounded, entire, thin, concolorous with the thallus to brighter or brownish; thalline rim incurved. Proper exciple fused, rather thick, reddish brown to brownish internally to distinctly carbonised marginally and at the tips, usually amyloid at the base. Hymenium to c. 180 µm thick, not inspersed, conglutinated; paraphyses straight or bent, ±interwoven, unbranched, with slightly thickened tips; columellar structures well developed, to 150 µm wide, entire, carbonised, covered with a ±thick layer of greyish or brownish granules. Epihymenium brownish, with greyish or brownish granules. Asci 8-spored; tholus thin. Ascospores transversely septate, oblong to ellipsoidal, with ±rounded to narrowly rounded ends, hyaline to brown when mature, amyloid before initial pigmentation, 18–25 × 7–9 µm, with 4–7 locules; locules ±rounded to slightly angular, lentiform to oblong; end cells the same shape or hemispherical; septa thin to thick, regular; ascospore wall thick, initially thinly halonate, becoming distinctly ridged; endospore thick. Pycnidia not seen.
CHEMISTRY: Thallus K+ yellowish, C–, P+ yellow; containing psoromic acid (major), 2’-O-demethylpsoromic acid (trace), subpsoromic acid (trace).
